Objection: Authoritarian Moves (Firing the Referee)

The independence of our institutions is crumbling under political pressure. The firing of the BLS Commissioner is only the latest blow.

On August 1st, 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its July jobs report. It wasn’t good. Just 73,000 jobs added—a major slowdown. Even worse, they quietly revised May and June down by 258,000 jobs. That’s over a quarter-million jobs that never existed.

So what was Trump’s response?

Did he take responsibility? Propose a plan? Offer any solutions?

No.

He fired Erika McEntarfer, the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A career economist. A nonpartisan public servant. Gone—not because she lied, but because she told the truth.

This is not just another Trump tantrum. It’s a dangerous escalation in his war on reality.

The BLS has always been a trusted source of economic data. It doesn't work for any president. Its job is to provide the facts—no matter how politically inconvenient they may be.

Firing the BLS Commissioner sends a chilling message:

Tell the truth, and you’re gone.

And it’s not the first time. He’s gone after:

  • The Congressional Budget Office

  • Inspectors General

  • Scientists at the CDC and FDA

  • Career DOJ officials

  • Military leaders

  • And now, the Bureau of Labor Statistics

This is what authoritarianism looks like:
When the numbers don’t match the propaganda, the solution isn’t to fix the problem—it’s to silence the people reporting it.

Markets dropped. Economists warned of lost credibility. Even some Republicans sounded the alarm.

Because if you can’t trust the numbers…what can you trust?

This isn't just about one bad jobs report.
It's about whether truth still matters in this country.
It’s about whether we allow one man to decide which facts are allowed to exist.

He didn’t like the score—so he fired the referee.
And if we don’t push back, there won’t be any referees left.
