Objection: ICE Assaulted Members of Congress and Arrested a Mayor

What happened in Newark isn’t just outrageous—it’s illegal. ICE is defying the law to hide what’s happening inside its detention centers.

This week, three sitting members of Congress—LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Rob Menendez—showed up to conduct oversight at the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey.

ICE assaulted them.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who’s been repeatedly denied access to the facility, tried to join them. Instead, he was handcuffed, arrested, and taken away to an undisclosed location.

This isn’t just disturbing. It’s illegal.

Federal law—specifically, Section 527 of the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act—explicitly states that ICE cannot prevent members of Congress from entering detention facilities for the purpose of oversight. They don’t even have to give prior notice. And ICE is also barred from making any temporary modifications to cover up conditions inside.

But that’s exactly what ICE did.

They obstructed lawful oversight. They assaulted federal officials. They arrested a sitting mayor. And they broke the law to do it.

So the question is: what is ICE so desperate to hide?

Because if this is how they treat Members of Congress, just imagine what they’re doing to the people detained inside.
