There are so many horrific aspects to Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill”—from slashing Medicaid to kicking millions off food assistance. But today, I’m focusing on just one piece of it: the part that will hit every single one of us, fast and directly.
Our energy bills.
It’s 96 degrees (feels like 104!) in New York City. There’s a heat advisory in effect. I’m blasting my AC like millions of others—and I already know my electric bill is going to skyrocket.
And it’s not just here. There are dangerous heat waves sweeping across the country and the world.
So how does this bill respond to a growing climate crisis and unbearable summer heat?
By making it worse.
The Big, Beautiful Bill ends or severely restricts the tax credits that help people:
Buy electric vehicles
Upgrade home energy efficiency
Access solar and other clean energy options
These credits weren’t just climate policies—they were cost-saving lifelines. They made it possible for families to lower their bills and lower their emissions. And now? Gone.
That means higher bills this summer. Higher bills next summer. And even fewer tools for regular people to adapt, protect themselves, or fight back.
And for what?
So billionaires can get more tax breaks.
So Trump and his allies can punish anything that sounds like “Green New Deal” policy.
So the donors win, and the rest of us suffer.
This isn’t theoretical. This isn’t down the line. You’re going to feel this in your next bill.
It’s not just the heat.
It’s the policies.
And the people who passed them.
With love, outrage, and solidarity,
Eliza
