Nearly two-thirds of the DOJ’s Federal Programs Branch—the unit tasked with defending Trump’s most controversial policies—has resigned or announced plans to leave. According to Reuters, 69 out of 110 lawyers are gone.
Why? Because they feared being forced to misrepresent facts in court.
Because legal ethics are being trampled by political loyalty tests.
Because Attorney General Pam Bondi warned that any government lawyer who didn’t “vigorously” defend Trump’s agenda could face disciplinary action.
Now, it’s not just quiet resignations.
Today, Monday, July 14, Bondi fired one of the DOJ’s top lawyers, according to ABC News, sending a clear message to the remaining staff: fall in line, or you’re next. The attorney—who had spent over a decade at the department—was reportedly viewed as insufficiently committed to pushing Trump’s legal agenda. No misconduct. No scandal. Just…not loyal enough.
This isn’t about legal strategy. It’s about control.
These aren’t political operatives being pushed out—they’re career public servants, many of whom served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. And now they’re being replaced with hand-picked loyalists.
This is what autocracy looks like. Not in theory. Not someday.
Right now.
